Character Information: Here!

Personality: (I am so, so sorry for how long this got.)

Dipper Pines, a young boy with quite the head on his shoulders. Having always been interested in the weird and paranormal since he was a young boy, he's been nothing but curious and excited since he's arrived in the strange little town called Gravity Falls for the summer.

Though new places comes with new faces, and socializing has never really been one of Dipper's fortes. His twin sister, Mabel has always been the outgoing and friend-making one of the two, and it's painfully obvious just how awkward this boy is as you watch the series. In fact, it's brought up throughout the series by other character, including himself, that he's "sweaty and awkward."

He's not very good at picking up social cues and thus, he's got a terrible foot-to-mouth problem, where he'll speak without thinking and hurt feelings. Such as during an episode, Boyz Crazy, Dipper spent the episode trying to prove to Wendy (a coworker whom he has a big crush on) that her current boyfriend was a phony and didn't actually care about her. He succeeded, and excited that the girl he liked was now free of a boyfriend had carelessly asked her to accompany him and his great-uncle for bowling literally seconds after she had burst into tears and broken up with her boyfriend. The result was her yelling at him and leaving as an emotional wreck. Another instance of his foot-to-mouthness would be later on in the series, he had decided that he wanted to become an apprentice to one of his great-uncles which would mean staying behind in Gravity Falls and growing up without his twin sister whom he had spent his entire life to that point with. Overhearing this, Mabel confronted him and in an attempt to try and calm her down Dipper had told her that nothing lasts forever, that summer eventually ends and she took it the wrong way. She ran away from her brother in tears and fled to the woods, leaving Dipper to feel terrible for not being able to comfort her properly.

On top of constantly eating his own foot, Dipper's awkwardness is always turned up to the max when he's around girls. Namely, ones he's interested in romantically. Wendy being primarily his love interest during the series has gotten the worst of it. Like he is always, constantly whispering things about her under his breath when he thinks she's out of ear range such as "I love you", or laughing at a joke of hers for a long period of time until finally whispering "I've been laughing too long". Wendy herself has admitted to hearing these things and picking up on his crush whilst he was completely unaware that she even knew the whole time.

He also tries to impress the girls he likes which almost always results in second-hand embarrassment. Like trying to impress Wendy and her friends, and make a good first impression by dissing his sister's own introduction by saying "she's not one for first impressions. Unlike this guy!" ...that's accompanied by pointing towards himself with both of his thumbs and getting a lot of silent, judging stares from his peers. Another instance of him trying too hard to impress a girl he likes is later on in the series, when he had to help out with a haunting of local rich girl Pacifica Northwest, whom he hated with the passion of a thousand suns at first but eventually warmed up to during their ghost escapades. After he had caught the ghost for the first time, Pacifica asked him to stay and he arrogantly replied "I can't, I've got a category ten ghost to take care of!" with the intent to seem cool and tough. But it fell flat when he started walking while he was still staring at Pacifica, and ended up walking right into a pillar.

Though his awkwardness is quite prevalent, Dipper's intelligence really shines through when he's given the chance. Being interested in conspiracy theories and mysteries since he was a kid, he's honed his skills in problem solving and sleuthing and has really become a top-notch investigator! On top of his overarching investigation of who the author of these mysterious journals explaining the monsters and paranormal items found around Gravity Falls, Dipper's solved quite a few problems through the series using his excellent detective skills.

During an early episode, Head Hunters, the Pines family is presented with a murder to solve. A murder.... of a wax replication of the twins' great-uncle Stanley. It was a case that not even the police could solve, so Dipper took it upon himself to put his skills to work and catch that murderer red handed. Or, should I say, left handed, since the murderer primarily used his left hand. A clue Dipper had found out along with a footprint that adorned a hole right in the middle, which lead Dipper to the town's local Newspaper journalist Toby Determined. A left handed reporter with a hole right in the middle of his shoe. It really was good rationalizing, and would have held up in court if Toby hadn't have had an alibi for the time of the murder. The twins, dejected, returned home to where Dipper figured out that the other wax figures that they had been storing had holes in their shoes as well and came to the conclusion that it was one of them. Which.. it was. They were cursed, and had taken their anger at being stored away for 20 years by cutting the head off the wax Stan, mistaking him for the real one.

He's been on a few goose hunts as well, like during Irrational Treasure where the twins were hunting down information about the Northwest's family being frauds. Dipper used rational thinking when finding and trying to solve the clues but unfortunately, they all had solutions that were so random and silly that no one would have even thought of them besides his random and silly sister, who stumbled upon the answers by accident. Or during another episode, Society of the Blind Eye, where the twins and co. had followed around a symbol found in Dipper's journal until it led them to a cult, dedicated to erasing memories of the past that haunted their minds in the future. That involved sneaking around a museum stealth style, and following around a chute where memories were sent through to find the lost memories of a friend of Dipper's. Through Dipper's lead, they were able to recover his memories and become a step closer to figuring out who the author was.

On top of being an excellent detective, Dipper happens to be very book smart as well! He's used intense math to figure out how to cheat the universe, and create a timeline that he would be happy with. He's been labeled "one of the smartest players of Dungeons, Dungeons and more Dungeons (a D&D parody) ever seen", he spent days trying to decipher the password to a laptop in Sock Opera by looking through and entering millions of word/letter combinations, he's multi-lingual -- able to speak both English and Latin to a degree in case of running into a cult where they only speak Latin (and presumably so he can read and understand spells since Latin is primarily used for them in old folklore and even in the journals), and he's also a master at deciphering codes and cryptograms. He can decipher almost anything off the top of his head, using things such as the Atbash cipher, Ceaser cipher, A1Z26 cipher, and keyed Vigenere ciphers. Though his book smarts only last to a point, as he's admitted himself that he'll use big words that he doesn't know the meaning to just so he can sound smart and keep the position as the group's genius.

Dipper's also someone who's very determined and stubborn. When he sets his mind to something, there's really not a whole lot that can change it. His determination is a pure driving force that helps him get through tough situations, and continue to look for answers to questions that he's asked over and over while his stubbornness is almost a childish reluctance to change what he's decided.

He's very determined from the moment he found his journal to find the person who wrote it, even though he's drawn blanks and has been stumped over and over and over again. In Scary-Oke, he brings up how summer was half over and how he wasn't any closer to finding out any answers he had about Gravity Falls, namely, who was the author and why. He'd been investigating the time prior and had come up blank but he wasn't going to stop there. The very next episode he decided to investigate an old tree, believed to be the secret entrance to something. Upon further investigation, him and his friends found out that it was a bunker created by the author in case of emergency. And in Society of the Blind eye, the whole reason why they had followed that symbol was because he put the pieces together and they all added up to his friend with lost memories to being the author. He interrogated this friend, Fiddleford McGucket, flashing the pages over in his face until McGucket caught sight of that symbol and thus led them on a wild goose chase to find out what it meant.

Not only that, but he's shown his determination in other situations too. Like being determined in Time Traveler's Pig to go back in time over and over again until his future had a perfect outcome. Or in Sock Opera where his determination to crack the laptop's password led to him making a deal with the Devil so to speak. Or even in Not what he Seems, where his great uncle Stanley had been convicted of a serious crime of stealing radioactive chemicals, and Dipper and Mabel were convinced that he was innocent so they put their lives at risk in order to prove so. They had been taken away from Stan by the FBI while Stan was undergoing interrogation at the police station, and while mulling over what to do during the car ride to a child service office, Dipper got the idea to check the surveillance camera's at the Mystery Shack, the house/shop that Stan owned and they were currently staying in. Mabel, in order to get them out of the grasp of the FBI, challenged a nearby truck driver and caused their car to get into an accident where the children climbed free from and ditched the FBI agent to go back to the shack and prove that their uncle had done nothing wrong.

His stubbornness, as mentioned before is more childish and leaning towards vindictiveness than anything else. During Head Hunters, the reason why he investigated the murder was not only because the police couldn't figure it out themselves, but because the police were looking down at him for even wanting to try. He wanted to prove to them that he wasn't just some adorable kid and stubbornly kept on the case until he presented it to them with all the smugness the kid could muster. During another episode, Dipper vs. Manliness, he went on an epic quest to better himself and become manlier just for the sole reason that Mabel and Stan had previously picked on him for being wimpy and adorable. He went through many tasks like shoving his hand into a mysterious "pain hole", using alligators as stepping stones or recovering the head of something called the Multibear, just so he could prove to his family that he wasn't so wimpy after all.

His stubbornness and determination are also reasons for why he's able to be brave in the face of danger. In the very first episode, Tourist Trapped, when Dipper is sure that his sister Mabel has gotten herself into trouble he takes the Mystery Shack's cart and drives it deep into the woods, where he finds her in danger of becoming a hostage to thousands of gnomes. He managed to save her from them but that only made them angry and thus, they all banded together to form a giant monster, they chased the twins down and Dipper stood up to them in their monstrous form even though he and Mabel were both clearly scared. In Dipper vs Manliness, he refused to kill the Multibear and recover it's head and thus, stood up to the Manotaurs who had been aiding him on his quest to become manly. They were tall, strong, and viscous beasts and he stood his ground and looked their leader right in the eye while he told them that he wasn't going to do it. In Gideon Rises, one of Mabel's ex boyfriends Gideon was so determined to win her back and force her to marry him that he made a giant robot version of himself and chased the twins down. He took Mabel and threw Dipper to the side and in retaliation, Dipper risked his life by jumping off a cliff above and crashing through one of the eyes of the robot to beat the crap out of Gideon who was controlling it inside. And in Dipper and Mabel vs. the Future, when his other great uncle Stanford was beaten and battered and faced with a dangerous threat, Dipper stood up to said threat (which was an A.I of some kind that had Dipper at gunpoint) with fire in his eyes. He said, and I quote "Oh yeah? You think you can scare me?! Do your worst! Nothing in the universe is gonna take away my uncle, so go ahead! Give me what you got!"

Though brave, that isn't to say Dipper can't get scared or paranoid. In fact, it's been mentioned offhandedly by other characters that he's got his mind wrapped up in his conspiracy theories -- that he's always paranoid about something. And they're not entirely wrong. Dipper's a fairly wary character, he's careful around strangers and second guesses people and situations the instant things seem suspect. Like in Tourist Trapped, Mabel had gotten herself a boyfriend in a very quick amount of time. A boyfriend who was a teenager with a hunched back and haunting misdemeanor. Dipper, not liking the look of her new boyfriend immediately consulted the journal he had just found and come to the conclusion that he was a zombie thanks to his looks and stature. He followed Mabel and him around with a camera, taking videos to try and pile up evidence to prove his case but he came up cold in the end.

Well, no. Her boyfriend might not have been a zombie but he did wind up to be an entire colony of gnomes. Go figure.

Another instance of his paranoia/wariness would be during The Last Mabelcorn. His great-uncle Stanford (or Ford) had taken Dipper to his secret study to try and strengthen Dipper's mind. Having both been previously targeted by a demon who only lived in the mind or dreamscape, as some call it, Ford wanted to protect his family by using a machine that would strengthen their mind enough to keep Bill out. Now Dipper, being interested in how Ford worked had slipped the machine on to Ford's head to get a peek at his great uncle's thoughts. Instead of thoughts, though, images of Bill and Ford shaking hands and calling each other friends flashed past the screen and immediately set off Dipper's red flags. He backed away from his uncle, who had just caught on to what happened and immediately accused Ford of being possessed by Bill. "Wh-why were you really scanning my thoughts? Are you Bill right now?!"

At that point, Dipper had gotten his hand on a memory wiping gun and mumbled "Trust no one, trust no one..!" over and over until he finally shot his uncle. The gun didn't really cause any harm and in the end, Ford wasn't being possessed and Dipper had just overreacted dramatically to the situation.

Because of his paranoia and wariness, Dipper can be kind of a realist at times. Like previously mentioned, during Irrational Treasure the solutions to every clue were something imaginative and unusual, and Dipper constantly went for the more obvious and realistic answer. Like looking at the symbols written all over a map to try and figure out how to decipher it, whereas Mabel made the map into a hat and it ended up having the map point out directly to where they needed to go next. Or during Gideon Rises, after Gideon had succeeded in taking revenge on Dipper's family for Mabel breaking up with him among other things, Dipper tried his best but there came to a point where it was practically impossible to get back what Gideon had taken from them. When Mabel urged him to come up with another plan, he told her straight up that they had to give up, there was nothing else they could do.

Or during Society of the Blind eye, Mabel had received a message from one of her other ex boyfriends whom she actually really liked and Dipper told her not to get her hopes up because it could be something different than what she expected. He was right, of course as it was a notice that her ex was getting married to stop a family feud. Or finally in Weirdmageddon Part two, the entire episode was about how Mabel was trapped in a fantasy world and needed to accept reality for what it was. Dipper was put on trial for bringing the real world into the fantasy world and he stuck to what he believed. He told them that even though reality sucked, it was still reality and they had faced tough things before and gotten through them together, and they would continue to support each other through hard times in the future.

He's realistic, and down to Earth but he doesn't let you forget the fact that all and all: he's a kid! Dipper and Mabel constantly joke around in childish manners such as squirting silly string 'out their mouths' while pretending to be puking all over each other during prep for a party, or doing bad impressions of old time country/pioneer people as soon as Stan told them they'd be dead to him if they started talking like that. They also tend to beat on each other for laughs and giggles like punching or prodding each other's sides while joking around, or smacking each other around with plastic bats for entertainment. He'll do other silly things too like compete in a race to see who can get syrup from their bottle to spill in to their mouth quicker, races to see who can brush their teeth faster, slamming their tummies together and whining about being hungry until Stan took them out for dinner or heck -- Dipper was locked into a closet once by clones of himself and they left him colouring books and a pack of cheese and crackers to tide him over for the time being.

His childishness also spreads in a negative way as well. Dipper's got himself a serious inferiority complex, due to being treated like a child when he wants to be seen mature and taken seriously. Because of this complex, he's done some pretty embarrassing or dumb things that make it hard for him to be respected in the way he'd prefer. He's lied about his age twice, once with a fake I.D (with googly eyes, sparkles, and macaroni glued on) and another by telling Wendy he was 13 so she wouldn't look down on him not being a teenager. He constantly shoves his accomplishments in his sister's face, even going as far as to keep a scoreboard of every game or race he's won against her and he grew an obsession with Mabel being one CM taller than him thanks to Mabel and Stan picking on him and embarrassing him for being shorter. He caused a zombie apocalypse because he wasn't being taken seriously by Stan or FBI agents whom he had called with concerns about the mysterious stuff cataloged in his journal and he also caused a married couple to go insane by capturing a "Gremoblin" for an attraction at the Mystery Shack after Stan disrespected him and his ideas for future attractions.

Along with his childlike wonder, Dipper is a very curious boy. It's what got him into conspiracies and the paranormal in the first place! He actually found his journal, which has become the driving force of a long time quest of finding the author and solving the mysteries of the town, thanks to his curiosity! He found a tree that felt more like metal than wood when he knocked on it, and he had actually found a panel on that tree that opened to reveal a switch, which opened a hole into the ground that held the journal inside. Another instance of his curiosity would be during Fight Fighters. He found a code on the side of an old arcade game and he just had to see what would happen if he punched it in. So he did, and wound up bringing one of the characters from said game into the physical world! To which he used for a bodyguard until the character tried to actually kill people who were bullying Dipper.

During Dreamscapers, Dipper and co. actually traveled into the mind of his great uncle Stan and while there, Dipper found a hall of memories and thoughts about him. He was warned not to look but in the end, he had to take a peek. He learned that Stan thought he was a wimp and "wanted to just get rid of him" and got hurt very badly from that, though as it turns out he hadn't listened to the rest of what Stan said which was that people said those things about Stan himself, so he was just tough on Dipper to roughen him up and make him able to stand up for himself. And finally during The Last Mabelcorn, while Ford was taking him to his study Dipper was following after and he was so interested in all the things set up around the place. He looked underneath sheets and had to be called to stop himself from looking at just about everything in the room. Not to mention what I said before about him being curious about how Ford thought, enough to slip the mind strengthening machine onto Ford without Ford knowing.

Dipper is also, from episode S010 and forward, the designated snarker of the group. He's sarcastic and sassy, and has only gotten worse about it as the series progresses. In Fight Fighters, Dipper and Wendy had been playing together at the arcade when her boyfriend, Robbie showed up and kicked Dipper out of his spot to play with his girlfriend. While they were playing, Wendy explained that she was going to be out of town for the next few days and Robbie, having not paid attention showed up at the shack and tried to call her out. Dipper, annoyed confronted Robbie about it and explained that Wendy was camping and under his breath, he said "if you had been paying attention, you would've known!" in a very snotty tone. Another instance of his snarkyness would be during Carpet Diem. Mabel invited her friends over for a sleepover and they were all very excited about it, and during the sleepover they had started yelling and getting loud. An annoyed and tired Dipper shot up from his bed and asked them to keep it down, saying "you're screaming at frequencies only dogs should be able to hear!" In Sock Opera, Mabel had mentioned Mermando who Dipper had momentarily forgotten and when he remembered, he said in a very uninterested tone while distracted with something else: "Oh, right. Mermando. Did not... care... for... Mermando."

Not to mention during Northwest Mansion Noir, his sister and her friends were watching a news story about Pacifica's rich party going on and he told them that they were being ridiculous because Pacifica was such a jerk. He said she was the worst and that he'd call her that to her face, and with perfect timing she had knocked on their door. He opened it, listened to what she had to say and only replied with "you're the worst" and a slam of the door to her face. And later on in the episode, when he was getting ready to fix their ghost problem he told her "I'll douse this ghost in some anointed water and he'll be out of your... probably fake blonde hair."

Though he can definitely be a jerk, Dipper is finally and foremost an extremely caring person. Though it's more obvious when his sister Mabel is involved, because she's the most important person to him. She's always the first person he thinks about when there's danger as shown in Tourist Trapped, immediately rushing to save her from her "zombie" boyfriend or Northwest Mansion Noir when the ghost he caught got free he immediately went back to the mansion to save Mabel or even during Weirdmageddon where the world was literally ending and there were things he needed to do to stop it from doing so, he only cared about Mabel's safety at the time until Ford had to forcibly stop him.

He also tends to give up things for Mabel's happiness even if it means making himself unhappy. Time traveler's pig, where he had cheated the universe to make the outcome he wanted he had unknowingly stopped Mabel from winning a pet pig at the fair the two were attending at the time, and though he argued a ton over how this reality was better because his day went well and Mabel was only going to be upset over the pig for a day, he eventually went back and changed time to how it should originally be so Mabel could win her pig and be happy. Or during The Deep End when he had just gotten a job as a lifeguard along with Wendy, and he was excited to spend the summer working with her. While that was going on, Mabel was falling in love with Mermando who was literally a mermaid and she had stolen pool supplies to try and get him to the ocean. Dipper had been put on night duty to make sure no pool supplies were taken and he chased Mabel down to the ocean to try and get her to return the stuff before he was fired. In the end, Mermando got free but needed to keep a megaphone because his voice was weak and he wasn't sure if his family would hear him. So, to keep Mabel happy Dipper gave up the megaphone and promptly got fired the next day.

He worried about Mabel in Summerween even though the two had recently gotten into a fight and Mabel refused to talk to him. She scraped her elbow and he asked if she was okay but he was only met with silence from her, though later after they made up he fetched her a band-aid. In Scary-oke, during the zombie outbreak the twins were cornered and Dipper was eventually caught by one of the zombies. In his last breath, he apologized to Mabel for getting them into the mess in the first place. He jumped off that cliff into a window/robot eye for Mabel, and he eventually decided not to take Ford's apprenticeship even though it was something he really looked forward to so him and Mabel could continue to grow up together and so she'd be happy.

He doesn't only care about Mabel though! In Fight Fighters when his arcade body guard started wanting to actually kill Robbie instead of just rough him up a little, Dipper tried everything in his power to stop the character so Robbie wouldn't be hurt so bad. He got really worried and scared and eventually fought the character himself and saved Robbie's life. In into the Bunker, Wendy and him had been attacked by a shape-shifting monster which shifted into Wendy at some point and faked her death, and Dipper kneeled next to her fake dead body and burst into tears, confessing his love to her while he thought she was dead (though unfortunately for him she was actually standing.. right behind him.) In Blendin's Game, he and Mabel threw a birthday party for their friend Soos only to find out that something tragic happened on his birthday, thus making him too depressed to celebrate it. They traveled back through time and found out that Soos' father had left years ago and never attended his birthday parties, even though he always promised he would. The twins had gotten in trouble with time police at that time and sent to trial by a series of challenges and though they could have easily escaped, the prize was a "time wish" that could grant anything in the universe, so the twins participated and won the time wish so they could wish that Soos' dad would come to his birthday parties. (Though they asked Soos for his opinion on it and gave him the wish, which he spent on fixing them up from their sustained injuries from the trials.) And finally, he also comforted Pacifica during Northwest Mansion Noir, when she realized that her family was only rich through lying and cheating and was convinced that she was just as bad. He told her "you might be your parents' daughter, but you don't have to be like them." and effectively cheered her up and helped her gain the confidence to stand up against them.
